# Test mode & sandbox

Every organization has a sandbox with its own data. There you try everything with test keys, without touching real records.

## live and test

| | test | live |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Prefix | `bodo_uk_test_` · `bodo_sa_test_` | `bodo_uk_live_` · `bodo_sa_live_` |
| Valid in | the sandbox of your organization | the production organization |
| Data | test data of the sandbox | real records |
| Try it in the portal | yes | no, the gateway rejects it |

A test key never reaches the production organization and vice versa. Limits, errors, webhooks and versions behave the same in both.

## What is already on in the sandbox

- Once the Public API module is enabled for your organization, it is enabled for its sandbox too.
- The API level of the sandbox is then already “on”; you do not need to switch it on there yourself.
- Without the module the sandbox answers [403 API_MODULE_DISABLED](/en/problems/API_MODULE_DISABLED/) as well.

## How to use it

1. Open the sandbox in Bodo (organization menu, “Show sandbox”).
2. There, create a test key under Settings › Interfaces › API keys.
3. Set the key as `BODO_API_KEY` and start; every change carries the mark “API” and the chip “Sandbox” in the history.
